A horrific headline not far from the truth.
Every year the federal government purchases billions of dollars worth of soda through Federal SNAP dollars (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Soda is a pharmaceutically laced, thirst inducing, SUGAR BOMB that causes rapid addiction and leads to massive consumption of high fructose corn syrup. Youth are force-fed mistruths about the glorious life of soda through stars like Lebron James and Katy Perry.
Like a goose fattened by force-feeding corn with a feeding tube; our unknowing, SODA drenched livers turn fatty… HUMAN FOIE GRAS… a condition termed NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease).
NAFLD is now the leading cause of acquired liver disease in children with rates estimated at close to 10 percent of children, with Latino youth disproportionately affected. It is estimated that 10 percent of affected youth will go on to need liver transplantation to survive, thus 1 in 100 children in the United States will require liver transplantation from overconsumption of SODA and sugar. Adult liver doctors predict that within the next 10 yrs, NAFLD (Human Foie Gras) will be the leading cause of liver transplantation in this country.
NAFLD is NOT the only global health epidemic flourishing under KING COLA's reign. 1 to 2 sugary drinks per day increases your risk of type 2 diabetes by 25 percent.
One soda a day increases a child's risk of becoming obese by 60 percent.
One soda per day increases your risk of heart attack by 20 percent. Soda is also linked to increased risk of certain types of cancers.
This is when you expect the leader of the village to STEP UP and make BIG CHANGES.
In 2008 the current administration floated the idea of a National Soda Tax. That same year lobby money from BIG SODA went up 30 fold in Washington and the soda tax proposal vanished. Alas, along comes Michelle Obama's bold initiative to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. Unfortunately, FLOTUS's Let's Move campaign disappoints, redirecting the pubic eye towards exercise and away from the REAL culprit…. the overconsumption of SODA, sugary drinks, and SUGAR (In 2012 we pleaded with First Lady Michelle to rename campaign… #LetsNotDrinkSugar ) Political impotence has left SODATRON's evil empire unchecked. Through money, lies, and political ties BIGSODA pumps poison to our progeny.
ACTION ITEMS for IMMEDIATE EXECUTION:
1) A National Tax on SODA & sugar laden drinks (it's working in Mexico).
2) Utilization of soda tax revenue to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by actions such as serving real food at schools (chocolate milk is NOT milk), eliminating food deserts through the creation of urban gardens (like the Ron Finley Project), and subsidizing the purchase of real food for SNAP participants.
3) Disallowing the purchase of soda, sugary drinks, candy, and junk food with SNAP money. IF you are wondering how low income families will afford to purchase real food, please refer back to action item #2.
